Best Places to Sell Unity Source Code in 2026: Fees Compared
Envato cut every CodeCanyon author to 50% in July 2026 and SellMyApp closed. Here is where Unity game templates and editor tools can be sold now, and what each marketplace actually pays.
Two things changed the map for Unity sellers this year. SellMyApp, the marketplace most people used for reskinnable game templates, shut down and relaunched under new owners as a place to sell whole businesses. And Envato, which runs CodeCanyon, moved every author to a flat 50% share from 1 July 2026. This post lists the marketplaces still worth a Unity seller's time, what each one pays, and what each one is actually good for. Every figure links to the platform's own page, and the date we last checked is at the bottom.
The short version
- Unity Asset Store: 70% to the publisher, no exclusivity, the largest Unity-only audience, a curated review queue. The default for editor tools.
- CodeCanyon (Envato Market): 50% of the item price for every author since July 2026, exclusivity removed. Huge general traffic; Unity is a small corner of it.
- Codester: 70% flat, no exclusivity, general marketplace for scripts, themes, plugins and app source.
- itch.io: open revenue share you set yourself (the default is 10% to itch.io), aimed at games and game assets, minimal review.
- HyperCodeStore: 70% rising to 85% with sales volume, no exclusivity, Unity game templates and editor tools only, reviewed in Unity within 24 hours.
Unity Asset Store
The Asset Store Provider Agreement (section 4.3, last updated 13 April 2026) states that Unity pays providers seventy percent of the sales price, less refunds, bank fees and applicable taxes. There is no exclusivity clause, no listing fee, and the audience is exactly the one a Unity seller wants. The trade-offs are a review queue you cannot speed up, a fixed set of media requirements, and a store that is far better at selling reusable tools than finished games: a complete hypercasual game with a level editor is an unusual product there, and the category structure does not surface it well.
CodeCanyon (Envato Market)
Envato announced in May 2026 and applied from 1 July 2026 a single author fee: every author receives 50% of the item price component of the list price, and the exclusive and non-exclusive programmes were merged. For long-standing exclusive authors, whose fee could be as low as 12.5%, that is a cut of up to 37.5 points. For non-exclusive authors it is a rise from 45% to 50%. The reason to stay is traffic: Envato Market is one of the largest digital marketplaces anywhere, and a well-ranked Unity listing there sells on its own. The reason to add a second channel is that exclusivity is gone, so a second listing elsewhere now costs nothing on CodeCanyon. We compare the two in detail on the CodeCanyon alternative page.
Codester
Codester's support article on author commission is one sentence long: authors receive 70% commission of the item price on every sale. No exclusivity, no minimum sales, and the catalogue covers scripts, themes, plugins, app source code and graphics. It is a fair deal and a fair place; the limitation for Unity sellers is that Unity is one category among many, so discovery depends on the buyer already searching for it. See the Codester alternative comparison.
itch.io
itch.io lets creators set their own revenue share with the platform, defaulting to 10%, and sells game assets alongside games. There is almost no review, which cuts both ways: listings go live instantly, and buyers know that. It works well for small assets, jam projects and pay-what-you-want pricing, less well for a $99 template a buyer wants some assurance about before paying.
HyperCodeStore
This is our marketplace, so weigh what follows accordingly. Sellers start at 70% of the sale price and move to 75%, 80% and 85% tiers based on average monthly sales over three months. There is no listing fee and no exclusivity. The catalogue is Unity only: game templates, most with level editors, and editor tools. Every submission is imported into the stated Unity version and run before approval, within 24 hours; the checks are published on the review process page. The honest limitation is size: we are new and small, and a listing here should be a second channel next to a larger store, not a replacement for one.
Which one for which product
- Editor tools and runtime libraries: Unity Asset Store first, then a Unity-only second channel.
- Finished hypercasual or puzzle game templates: a Unity-only marketplace that lists them as games, plus CodeCanyon or Codester for volume.
- Multi-game bundles and engines: wherever you can set a price above $99 without a platform discount you did not choose.
- Jam games, small asset packs, pay-what-you-want experiments: itch.io.
Pricing across marketplaces
Keep the same list price everywhere unless a platform adds its own buyer fee on top; buyers compare, and a cheaper copy of your own listing undercuts you. If you have never priced a template, the Unity source code price calculator gives a starting band from live listing prices and shows what you keep at each revenue share.
